Like most other people that are at least somewhat interested in their vehicle, I’ve occasionally looked into modifications that I can do to my car that will either enhance the performance or the looks. One of the modifications that I’ve seen pop up on various general automotive or Dodge Avenger specific forums is the addition of HID (High-intensity Discharge) headlights. I looked into HIDs briefly, but I wasn’t able to find out, conclusively, whether they were legal or not and how long my headlights would last if I had to open up the housings for an install.
When the opportunity came up to review a headlight that is marketed as “HID Attitude. Xenon-Fueled – 100% Street Legal.” I was pretty excited to see what they could do for my car.
Pros of the Sylvania SilverStar zXe
- Brighter than stock bulbs
- White light looks great
- Way easier to install than a true HID setup
Cons of the Sylvania SilverStar zXe
- Pricey, when compared to a regular replacement bulb, $69.99 (at time of writing)
- You might not notice a big difference after first installing, but give it some time
After installing one of the headlights it was instantly apparent that the SilverStar zXe sends out a much whiter light than my current headlights (which are also made by Sylvania). At first, however, and even while I was taking photos of the two bulbs shining at the same time, I didn’t think that the new bulb was brighter than my old bulb. “It just has a different look to it,” I thought. Well after driving around for a few days with the new bulb burning, I could definitely tell that the zXe is brighter than my stock bulbs, and for sure the whiter light looks great, in my opinion.
So the Sylvania SilverStar zXe has a nice bright, white look to it. It definitely steps up the appearance of my car. The only downside that I can find in this headlight is the price. At $70 it’s tough to justify over a $10 replacement bulb, but if you are looking to step up the look of your ride and don’t want to go the full HID route, the zXe is definitely worthy of your consideration.
