Meanwhile, performance comes from a turbocharged powerplant producing 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That engine is hooked up to an intelligent 8-speed automatic and BMW's advanced xDrive all-wheel drive. The X3's front/rear weight balance is a perfect 50:50, which explains why this BMW SUV feels intrinsically related to all BMW sports sedans of the past. The X3 is no slouch off the beaten path, either, with 8 inches of ground clearance, a fording depth of just under 20 inches, and terrific approach and departure angles.
